Tamar
Hello :) My name is Tamar Bernfeld. I am a second year PhD student in the Language, Literacy and Culture (LLC) program in the school of education.
I speak and write primarily in English. I have intermediate proficiency in Spanish (speaking and writing). I have basic fluency in American Sign Language and have done research on proposed writing systems for signed languages.
I do academic, professional, personal and creative writing in English. My Spanish writing mainly consists of writing emails to Spanish speaking friends in other countries and occasional FB posts/comments in Spanish.
I love to write. I enjoy academic writing when I am writing on a topic I feel strongly about.
I have taught all levels of English from basic literacy to advanced grammar at both the community and college levels. I've taught writing courses to undergrad and graduate students and have worked with a variety of students in three different writing centers.
My primary research interests are related to notions of 'standard' English, multiple Englishes, perceptions of non-standard varieties and using non-standard approaches in teaching writing/composition.
Looking forward to meeting you all :)
